Support Persons at Massage Appointments

A support person can assist with access while the client retains their own treatment choices.

Define the role

A companion might help with communication, mobility, dressing or reassurance. Tell the provider which tasks are needed and whether the person should remain throughout treatment. Ontario accessibility guidance recognizes support persons. An RMT’s professional-boundary standard also addresses the patient’s request to have another individual accompany them.

Keep privacy and consent separate

Agree what health information can be discussed in the companion’s presence. A capable client may want private time with the practitioner even when support is needed for another part of the visit. Being accompanied does not automatically make the companion a substitute decision-maker. The practitioner should address questions and explanations to the client directly.

Check the room and timing

A treatment room needs space for the support person without blocking equipment or exits. Explain whether the companion must help with a transfer or return at a particular time. If the practitioner identifies a limitation, discuss a workable arrangement in advance. Do not discover after arrival that the only available room cannot accommodate the agreed support.

A practical comparison

Hypothetical planning example: A support person may assist with clothing and then leave while the client speaks privately with the practitioner. Later, they may return for the transfer off the table. Scheduling those moments makes the support useful without removing privacy. The companion should know when to be available and the room must allow their role. If the practitioner speaks only to the companion, the client can ask for the conversation to be redirected to them.
