Service Animals and Massage Visits

Service-animal access should be arranged as a disability-related need, not treated as a pet booking.

Identify the arrangement

Tell the provider that you use a service animal and discuss where the animal will remain during assessment and treatment. Ontario guidance explains access to public areas and the limited circumstances where another law may exclude an animal. It also distinguishes service animals from pets. A generic no-pets rule does not answer the access question.

Preserve the working relationship

Staff should not distract, feed or touch the animal without permission. Ask about floor space, water access if relevant and a position that keeps the animal near you without obstructing the practitioner or exit. The animal’s handler remains responsible for its care and supervision; the massage provider should not be assumed to provide animal care.

Discuss conflicts directly

If another client’s allergy or the layout creates a concern, ask how the business will accommodate the situation rather than accepting a blanket refusal. For a home appointment, distinguish the client’s service animal from household pets that may need to be kept away from equipment. Request a clear confirmation so front-desk staff know what has been arranged.

A practical comparison

Hypothetical planning example: A client’s service animal usually remains near their feet, but the treatment table changes the usual arrangement. Discuss a nearby resting position that preserves the handler’s access and does not block movement. Staff should ask what works instead of treating the animal as an accessory to move out of the way. If a separate building rule is raised, identify the actual rule and a workable accommodation rather than relying on an unsupported no-animals statement.
